Ubisoft is making a significant change to Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege, making part of the game free-to-play as it approaches its tenth anniversary.  This evolution, dubbed Rainbow Six Siege X, is set to launch in 2025 and promises to overhaul core gameplay elements, paving the way for the next decade of the popular multiplayer shooter.

Known for its intense gunplay and destructible environments, Rainbow Six Siege has become a staple in the Tom Clancy franchise. Millions of players have engaged with its unique tactical gameplay and diverse roster of operators. Siege X represents the "biggest evolution yet" for the game.

Game Rant recently previewed Rainbow Six Siege X in Atlanta, experiencing the new activity and changes firsthand.  One of the most impactful changes is the introduction of a free-to-play mode, expanding the game's potential audience considerably.

As detailed in Ubisoft's official showcase, Siege X will introduce a "Free Access" tier, allowing players to download and play without an initial purchase.  A closed beta will precede the official launch, allowing players to test the changes beforehand.

While the free-to-play model increases accessibility, similar to Call of Duty Warzone and Overwatch 2, the Free Access tier has some limitations.  Initially, only 10 operators will be available, with progression unlocking an additional 16, totaling 26 playable characters.  Considering the full roster of over 74 operators, free access players will have a limited selection.

Furthermore, Free Access players will only have access to Unranked, Quick Play, and the new Dual Front mode. Competitive modes like Ranked and the Siege Cup will be exclusive to "premium access" players.

The Free Access tier will launch alongside the full Siege X update in Year 10 Season 2, estimated to be mid-2025, following the recently unveiled Year 10 Season 1.  Community reaction has been largely positive, with many expressing interest in trying the game for the first time.  Others are pleased that Ranked play will remain a dedicated experience for committed players.
