The long-standing MMORPG RuneScape and its developer Jagex are under fire after announcing the cancellation of new Pride Month content for 2025. The decision has sparked outrage among both the game's community and internal staff, with many accusing the studio of yielding to external pressures.

Since its launch in 2001, RuneScape has evolved significantly, introducing multiple versions of the game, including the nostalgic Old School RuneScape. However, the recent move to scrap Pride Month festivities has left many fans disappointed.

The Tales of Pride event, introduced in 2022, has been a highlight of RuneScape's annual calendar, celebrating the LGBTQ+ community with exclusive in-game rewards like the Banner of Pride and themed cosmetics. The event also featured player-organized parades, drawing hundreds of participants each June.

According to reports, Jagex informed employees in April about the cancellation, leading to internal protests. Some staff claimed that much of the planned content was already completed. CEO Jon Bellamy attributed the decision to a perceived decline in societal morality and growing hostility toward progressive themes in gaming.

The backlash has been fierce, with employees circulating an open letter urging management to reverse the decision. Fans have also voiced their displeasure, accusing Jagex of abandoning its inclusive values and catering to fringe groups.

Meanwhile, other games like Overwatch 2 are doubling down on Pride Month celebrations, offering new skins and themed events. The contrast has only intensified criticism of RuneScape's move, leaving many LGBTQ+ players questioning their future in the game.
