Wizards of the Coast has officially announced a thrilling collaboration between Magic: The Gathering and Sega's iconic Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. This crossover introduces exclusive Secret Lair card sets featuring beloved characters from the Sonic universe, blending the fast-paced world of Sonic with the strategic gameplay of Magic.

The Magic: The Gathering team continues to push boundaries with their "Universes Beyond" initiative, which has already brought fan-favorite franchises like Final Fantasy, Spider-Man, and Avatar: The Last Airbender into the game. Now, Sonic and his friends are joining the roster, offering players a fresh and exciting way to experience the game.

In 2025, Wizards of the Coast has made significant changes to how crossover sets are integrated into Magic: The Gathering. Starting with the Final Fantasy expansion, Universes Beyond cards will now be legal in the Standard format, alongside traditional in-universe sets. This opens up new possibilities for deck-building and competitive play.

The Sonic the Hedgehog Secret Lair drops will feature three distinct sets, each offering unique cards inspired by the franchise. One of the highlights is the "Turbo Gear" collection, which includes Sonic-themed versions of popular Artifact cards. For example, "Swiftfoot Boots" has been reimagined as "Air Shoes," while "Lightning Greaves" becomes "Power Sneakers."

These new cards are designed to synergize with existing mechanics like "Flash" and "Haste," reflecting Sonic's signature speed. Additionally, some of the reprinted cards, such as the "Piko Piko Hammer" (a Sonic-themed version of "Hammer of Nazahn"), are highly sought-after in the secondary market, making this release particularly exciting for collectors.
