Ready or Not Faces Backlash Over Content Censorship Ahead of Console Launch

The tactical shooter Ready or Not has recently become the target of review bombing on Steam, as players express their frustration over the developer's decision to censor certain content ahead of the game's upcoming console launch. While the game has been available on PC for several years, its release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S is scheduled for July 15, 2025.

Since its early access debut in 2021, Ready or Not has maintained a strong player base on Steam, peaking at over 55,000 concurrent players during its official launch in December 2023. Following its success on PC, developer Void Interactive announced plans to bring the game to consoles earlier this year. However, the studio's recent decision to tone down violence and nudity to meet platform requirements has sparked controversy among the PC community.

The backlash reached its peak on June 28, when Void Interactive confirmed that some of these content changes would also affect the PC version to ensure cross-play compatibility. This decision led to a wave of negative reviews on Steam, causing the game's recent rating to drop to "Mixed." Over the past month, 36% of user reviews have been negative, with particularly high rates of negative feedback on June 28 (64%) and June 29 (78%).

Many players argue that the PC version shouldn't be altered to accommodate console requirements, viewing these changes as a betrayal of the community that supported the game's development. Some have gone as far as to call it censorship, expressing disappointment that the game's original vision is being compromised.

With the console launch approaching, Void Interactive now faces the challenge of addressing this significant player backlash while finalizing the game for its multiplatform release. How the studio responds to this controversy could have lasting implications for Ready or Not's future and its relationship with its player base.
