Nintendo Switch 2 Sales Projections: Exceeding Expectations

2025-07-03 00:24:30

Contrary to initial reports, Nintendo Switch 2 sales have not officially reached the 5 million mark as previously indicated on Nintendo's website. This figure was mistakenly displayed due to a technical error. However, industry analysts predict that when the official launch month numbers are released, they will likely show the Nintendo Switch 2 not just meeting but exceeding this benchmark.

The Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025, marking eight years since the original Switch's debut. The new hybrid console boasts significant hardware upgrades and innovative features including GameChat functionality and mouse support through its Joy-Con controllers.

Financial analyst David Gibson of MST Financial clarified that the 5 million figure was merely a placeholder on an under-construction webpage that was accidentally made public. This number was never intended to represent actual sales data or projections. The erroneous information remained visible for approximately one week before being corrected.

Despite the initial misinformation, Gibson's personal estimates suggest the Switch 2 may have sold approximately 5.4 million units in June 2025 alone. This would represent an impressive start for the new console, potentially surpassing combined day-one sales of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Nintendo is scheduled to release official sales figures on August 1.

While the Switch 2 shows promising early performance, it faces significant competition from Nintendo's own historical successes. The Nintendo DS remains the company's best-selling console with approximately 154 million units sold as of February 2025, followed closely by the original Switch which trails by fewer than 2 million units.
