AI Could Make GTA 7 Development Cheaper Than GTA 6, Says Former Rockstar Developer
2025-07-04 19:33:42Former Rockstar Games developer Obbe Vermeij, who contributed to multiple Grand Theft Auto titles from 1995 to 2009, suggests that artificial intelligence may significantly reduce development costs for GTA 7 compared to its predecessor. While Grand Theft Auto 6 hasn't even launched yet, Vermeij speculates about how emerging technologies could reshape future game production cycles.
With Grand Theft Auto 5 approaching its 12th anniversary, the gaming community eagerly anticipates the franchise's next evolution. Rockstar Games initially announced Grand Theft Auto 6 in 2023, with its release recently postponed to May 26, 2026, to ensure the title meets the studio's exacting standards. In an official statement, Rockstar emphasized their commitment to delivering an experience that would exceed player expectations.
Despite rumors of GTA 6's astronomical $2 billion budget, parent company Take-Two Interactive maintains the actual figure hovers around $1 billion. However, Vermeij believes subsequent titles could see reduced costs through AI implementation. During an interview with Kiwi Talkz, he predicted that within five years, AI could automate elements like environmental design and cinematic sequences: "My prediction is GTA 7 will be cheaper to make than GTA 6."
Vermeij envisions a future where AI handles substantial portions of game creation: "Imagine a cutscene where AI generates all character models and dialogue based on scene descriptions." He clarifies that human developers would still oversee creative direction and technical polish, focusing on narrative design and bug resolution rather than repetitive tasks.
While AI integration in gaming isn't new, the rise of generative AI has sparked industry debates. Recent controversies, like 11 Bit Studios' undisclosed use of AI text in The Alters, demonstrate growing player sensitivity to these technologies. The studio later clarified that AI content served only as temporary placeholders.
It's important to note that Vermeij's insights remain speculative, as he departed Rockstar following GTA 4's 2009 launch. The studio may prioritize other franchises post-GTA 6, potentially developing sequels to Bully or Red Dead Redemption. Currently, all attention focuses on Grand Theft Auto 6, scheduled for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2026.
