Overwatch 2 Temporarily Removes Midtown Map Due to Graphical Glitch

Blizzard Entertainment has taken swift action by temporarily removing the Midtown map from Overwatch 2's rotation after players discovered a significant visual glitch. The Hybrid map, set in New York City, has been pulled from both Unranked and Competitive queues due to reports of disappearing vehicles when using lower graphical settings.

Midtown first appeared in Overwatch 2 during its 2022 launch as one of the new Hybrid maps. The urban battlefield gained popularity for its intense close-quarters combat and distinctive rainbow decorations during the game's annual Pride celebration. However, the current technical issue has forced developers to take it offline indefinitely while they work on a solution.

The problem emerged shortly after the mid-Season 17 update, when players noticed that certain parked cars throughout the map would fail to render properly on lower graphics presets. This visual bug could potentially give some players an unfair advantage by removing environmental obstacles that would normally provide cover during matches.

This isn't the first time Midtown has faced technical difficulties. During Season 6, the map was disabled for nearly the entire season due to undisclosed issues. The current problem appears unrelated to previous incidents, though some speculate that the map's frequent decorative changes for seasonal events might contribute to its instability.

Blizzard has not provided an estimated timeline for Midtown's return. Considering that the new Aatlis Flashpoint map required a month-long fix for its initial issues, players might need to wait until Season 18 for Midtown's full restoration. In the meantime, developers are likely working on a hotfix to address the graphical problems.

The temporary removal of Midtown gives players more opportunities to experience the recently revamped Suravasa and New Junk City maps. These locations received significant gameplay improvements in the mid-Season 17 update, featuring better sightlines, redesigned choke points, and additional thematic elements that enhance the overall combat experience.
