Original Modern Warfare 2 Potentially Headed to Xbox Game Pass

Xbox Game Pass subscribers might soon gain access to the classic Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, as recent advertising materials appear to hint at its upcoming addition to the service. While not officially confirmed, this wouldn't be the first instance where Microsoft accidentally revealed an Xbox Game Pass title ahead of schedule.

Modern Warfare 2

First launched in November 2009 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC platforms, Modern Warfare 2 quickly established itself as one of the most celebrated entries in the Call of Duty franchise. Following Microsoft's completion of the Activision Blizzard acquisition in late 2023, subscribers have been eagerly requesting this iconic title's inclusion in the subscription library.

Microsoft appears to be responding to these community requests, based on evidence found in a new Xbox Game Pass Premium advertisement promoting the service's $1 trial offer. As highlighted by Reddit user TypicalNarr, the promotional collage prominently features what appears to be the cover art for the original Modern Warfare 2 positioned near the top center of the image. The visual evidence strongly suggests this refers to the 2009 classic rather than the 2020 Campaign Remastered version.

While such marketing materials don't provide definitive proof of future Xbox Game Pass releases, this isn't the first indication that the legendary first-person shooter might be heading to the subscription service. Earlier this year, XboxEra reported that the original Modern Warfare 2 was scheduled for Xbox Game Pass, citing sources close to Microsoft with an anticipated March-April 2025 release window that ultimately didn't materialize. Although a Modern Warfare 2 title did arrive in May, it turned out to be the 2022 reboot rather than the 2009 original. If the current advertising proves accurate, the earlier report may have been correct in substance, though slightly off in timing.

The addition of Modern Warfare 2 would represent the sixth premium Call of Duty title available through Microsoft's subscription service, assuming it arrives after Black Ops 7 joins Xbox Game Pass on November 14. Even if the shooter does get added to the XGP library, it remains uncertain whether it will include the complete package. Microsoft might opt to offer only the single-player campaign component, which would allow longtime fans to revisit classic missions without drawing significant player attention away from the latest Call of Duty releases.
