Avowed's Strong Sales Suggest Potential Sequels and Expansions

Obsidian Entertainment is celebrating the successful launch of their new fantasy RPG, Avowed, with reports indicating strong sales figures despite its inclusion in Xbox Game Pass.  This positive reception suggests a promising future for the title, with discussions already turning towards potential expansions and sequels.

Initial reviews for Avowed have been largely positive, praising the game's engaging combat system. While some critics pointed to a somewhat static world and certain narrative elements as shortcomings, the overall player experience seems to have resonated well. Steam reviews currently categorize Avowed as 'Mostly Positive,' demonstrating a general satisfaction amongst players.

A Bloomberg report by Jason Schreier confirmed Obsidian's satisfaction with Avowed's sales, and revealed director Carrie Patel's openness to expanding upon the game's established world.  'The idea of something new is appealing,' Patel stated, 'but it seems more likely she’ll be building on Avowed’s foundation for expansions or sequels.' Patel further expressed her enthusiasm for continuing to develop the world and gameplay, stating,  'Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it.' This strongly suggests that players can expect further developments in the Avowed universe, possibly as early as 2025.

The Bloomberg report also shed light on Avowed's complex development history, including its initial conception as a multiplayer experience akin to Skyrim and two subsequent reboots before arriving at its final form.  After being in development since 2018, Obsidian's commitment to innovation appears to have paid off.

While the timeline for potential Avowed expansions or a sequel remains unclear, Obsidian is also actively developing The Outer Worlds 2, currently slated for release later in 2025.  Given Obsidian's history of releasing expansions for the original The Outer Worlds alongside the development of Avowed, it's plausible that the studio could manage both projects concurrently.
