Discord is significantly enhancing its desktop application, aligning it more closely with the mobile experience. PC users can anticipate new customization features and a revamped game overlay promising enhanced performance and broader game compatibility.

This update follows a series of recent changes from Discord, hinting at further developments.  These enhancements could be in anticipation of a potential initial public offering (IPO).

The Discord Game Overlay has undergone a complete overhaul, eliminating the need to "hook" into games. The redesigned overlay boasts improved responsiveness and speed. Features are now organized into customizable widgets, and an action bar streamlines access to controls, calls, streaming options, and more.  Users can even watch friends' streams directly within the overlay, creating a split-screen-like experience.

Importantly, this new overlay boasts wider game compatibility, minimizing conflicts with anti-cheat systems.

The desktop app is also receiving a refresh, incorporating features from the mobile version.  Users can choose from four free visual themes and adjust the UI density with three preset levels, optimizing spacing for personal preference. Server lists are expandable, displaying full server titles. Voice and video call settings are now centralized, and the mic and camera icons have clearer indicators: a brighter red glow for a muted mic and a green glow for an active camera, reducing accidental broadcasts or muted conversations.

These updates focus on enhancing user experience through customization and usability. While the future of Discord remains a topic of discussion among users, recent additions like the ignore feature and the potential for in-game Discord integration are promising signs.
