Ubisoft is gearing up for a substantial update to Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, scheduled to release later this year. This update will introduce highly anticipated features, including New Game Plus and a third-person mode, addressing fan requests that have been pending since the game's launch in December 2023.

Despite its initial release being overshadowed by blockbuster titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora managed to attract a significant player base, selling approximately two million copies within its first few weeks. The game's developer, Massive Entertainment, has since released two story DLCs—The Sky Breaker in July 2024 and Secrets of the Spires in November 2024—alongside numerous updates and patches.

The upcoming major update is set to launch on December 5, 2025, coinciding with the game's two-year anniversary. Among the key additions are New Game Plus, which allows players to restart their journey while retaining their inventory and unlocked skills, and a brand-new third-person mode. The New Game Plus mode will also feature an expanded skill tree, higher-tier gear, and more formidable enemies to challenge returning players.

The introduction of a third-person mode is particularly noteworthy, as the game's first-person perspective had been a point of contention among fans of the Avatar franchise. Many players had likened Frontiers of Pandora to an "Avatar-flavored Far Cry game," citing Ubisoft's familiar open-world design. This new perspective may entice previously hesitant players to give the game another chance.

The timing of this update aligns perfectly with the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third installment in James Cameron's Avatar film series, slated for December 17, 2025. This synergy between the game and the movie is expected to reignite interest in the franchise, offering fans a double dose of Avatar content during the holiday season.

While the New Game Plus and third-person modes are the headline features, Ubisoft has hinted at additional improvements and surprises that will be revealed closer to the update's launch. Fans of the game and the Avatar universe alike have much to look forward to as 2025 draws to a close.
