Minecraft Drops VR Support in Latest Bedrock Edition Update
2025-05-07 17:00:33Minecraft has officially phased out a beloved feature in its latest Bedrock Edition update. The new patch introduces Flat World presets, offering players a blank canvas for construction without the hassle of uneven terrain. Additionally, the update addresses multiple gameplay issues, including audio enhancements and block behavior improvements.
Originally launched in 2011 by Mojang Studios, Minecraft has since become a global phenomenon, available on nearly every major gaming platform. As the best-selling game of all time, it continues to attract nearly 170 million monthly players as of 2025. Prior to this Bedrock Edition update, the Minecraft Java Edition received a snapshot update in April 2025, which modified crafting recipes for dried ghasts, leads, and potion mechanics.
The Bedrock Edition 1.21.80 patch notes confirm Mojang's decision to end Virtual and Mixed Reality gameplay support, following Minecraft's discontinuation of PlayStation VR support in 2024. Previously, players could experience Minecraft in VR through mods like Vivecraft, compatible with SteamVR and Oculus Rift. While the removal was announced in October 2024 for Spring 2025, the final cutoff was delayed until this update.
The discontinuation of VR support marks a significant shift for fans seeking immersive gameplay. Minecraft once stood among the best open-world VR games, alongside titles like No Man's Sky and Skyrim. While some players expressed disappointment, others admitted they were unaware of Minecraft's VR capabilities but found the concept intriguing.
Despite the removal of VR features, Mojang has introduced innovative gameplay changes, such as revamped leash mechanics. Players can now tether mobs together or attach them to boats, reminiscent of The Walking Dead's Michonne and her zombie companions.
