PlayStation Unveils New Studio teamLFG and Their Ambitious Live-Service Project

PlayStation has officially announced the formation of teamLFG, a brand-new studio composed of industry veterans from renowned franchises like Destiny, Halo, and Fortnite. This marks PlayStation's 21st first-party studio acquisition. While specifics about teamLFG's inaugural project remain scarce, PlayStation has hinted at grand ambitions and a live-service framework for this upcoming title.

Interestingly, the origins of teamLFG trace back to last year's events. Following Bungie's mass layoffs in July 2024, approximately 155 employees (about 12% of Bungie's workforce) were transitioned to Sony Interactive Entertainment instead of facing termination. Among these transferred talents, a select group would form the core of a fresh studio tasked with developing one of Bungie's most promising incubation projects, internally referred to as Gummy Bears.

The PlayStation Blog has now officially introduced this Bungie offshoot as "teamLFG" (LFG meaning Looking For Group) and confirmed its integration into PlayStation's first-party ecosystem. Headquartered in Bellevue, Washington, teamLFG boasts developers with pedigrees from gaming giants like Destiny, Halo, League of Legends, Fortnite, Roblox, and Rec Room. PlayStation Studio Group CEO Hermen Hulst describes teamLFG as "fully operational" and currently developing an "ambitious incubation project." This debut title is reportedly a team-based action game that blends elements from fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and somewhat mysteriously, "frog-type games."

Set in a whimsical science-fantasy world, teamLFG's live-service title aims to create a space where "players can discover friendship, community, and belonging." These details align perfectly with Bungie's 2023 description of Project Gummy Bears, virtually confirming this as teamLFG's current undertaking. Notably, teamLFG intends to actively involve the gaming community throughout development, including implementing early access playtests—a PlayStation first—and continuous feedback integration post-launch. However, fans should expect a multi-year wait before teamLFG is prepared to formally announce its live-service project.

teamLFG's announcement represents PlayStation's second new first-party studio addition this year. In March, Dark Outlaw was revealed as another new PlayStation studio led by Call of Duty Zombies director Jason Blundell and based in Los Angeles. Unlike teamLFG, details about Dark Outlaw's debut project remain completely unknown, including whether it will follow a live-service model. Some PlayStation enthusiasts have expressed skepticism regarding teamLFG's live-service ambitions, particularly in light of Concord's disappointing performance. However, considering Sony's recent cancellation of several live-service initiatives across its studios, the company appears to have significant confidence in teamLFG's developing project.
