Sega and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio have officially announced that Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Though not as dominant as in its heyday, Virtua Fighter remains one of the most influential fighting game franchises in gaming history. As one of the pioneers of 3D fighting games, the series achieved massive success in arcades during the '90s. Now, the latest iteration is set to revitalize the franchise on modern platforms.

Originally released in arcades in 2006, Virtua Fighter 5 earned acclaim for its deep combat mechanics, drawing comparisons to classics like Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Soul Calibur 5. Sega has since refined the game through multiple updates, culminating in Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O., which debuted on PC earlier this year. The upcoming console release marks a significant milestone for the series.

According to Gematsu, the Virtua Fighter Direct presentation revealed that Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. will soon arrive on consoles. Producer Seiji Aoki confirmed cross-play functionality and the inclusion of rollback netcode, matching the PC version's performance. While no exact release date was provided, fans can expect the game to launch in the coming months.

This release signifies Virtua Fighter's return to home consoles after Ultimate Showdown in 2021. The franchise's last Xbox appearance was Final Showdown in 2020. The implementation of rollback netcode has been widely praised, as it ensures a lag-free competitive experience—a crucial feature for modern fighting games. Beyond R.E.V.O., Sega has teased the next mainline entry in the series. At the 2024 Game Awards, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio hinted at Virtua Fighter 6, which may introduce a story mode—a first for the franchise. With Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. heading to consoles and a new installment in development, the series is poised for a major resurgence.
