Hideki Kamiya's Vision for Bayonetta: A New Trilogy That Never Was
2025-05-13 02:02:24The mastermind behind Bayonetta, Hideki Kamiya, had ambitious plans to expand the beloved franchise with a fresh trilogy before his unexpected departure from PlatinumGames. Kamiya's influence on the action genre is undeniable, with his work at Capcom producing genre-defining titles like Resident Evil 2, the original Devil May Cry, and Okami. After leaving Capcom in 2006, Kamiya co-founded PlatinumGames, where he created 2009's groundbreaking Bayonetta, introducing players to the powerful Umbra Witch who battles supernatural foes with weapons and magical hair.
The success of Bayonetta spawned two Nintendo-published sequels that remained exclusive to Nintendo consoles. Both sequels maintained the series' high standards, and Bayonetta became a crossover star in games like The Wonderful 101 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The franchise expanded further in 2023 with Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon, a prequel exploring the witch's early training days.
While future Bayonetta games remain possible, Kamiya's 2023 exit from PlatinumGames means he won't be involved. In a recent YouTube interview (via Nintendo Everything), Kamiya debunked speculation that he intended to conclude the series with Bayonetta 3. Instead, he revealed plans to launch a new chapter in Bayonetta's story, potentially evolving into a fresh trilogy that might have reinvented the series' signature hack-and-slash gameplay.
Kamiya has also discussed other projects, including the canceled Scalebound, and expressed interest in remaking the first Devil May Cry - especially relevant given Netflix's successful Devil May Cry anime adaptation.
Currently, Kamiya is developing the long-anticipated Okami sequel through his new studio, Clovers Inc., which includes many original Okami developers. The Bayonetta franchise's future without its creator remains uncertain, with no new games currently announced. Kamiya's creative vision extended beyond individual titles, as he revealed the series exists in a shared universe with his other major works.
