CD Projekt Red CFO Advocates for Ciri as The Witcher 4 Protagonist
2025-05-13 23:51:52One of CD Projekt Red's key executives has recently addressed the studio's decision to feature Ciri as the lead character in The Witcher 4, emphasizing the creative advantages this choice brings. Following the monumental success of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, The Witcher 4 stands as one of the most eagerly awaited RPGs in recent years, with fans speculating about its direction.
The game was officially unveiled with an immersive cinematic trailer at The Game Awards 2024, receiving widespread praise for its stunning visuals and atmospheric world-building. However, some fans expressed skepticism about CD Projekt Red's decision to center the story around Ciri as The Witcher 4's protagonist. The studio defended its choice, citing support from The Witcher book series author Andrzej Sapkowski. Now, another high-ranking team member has weighed in on the discussion.
In an interview with Polish outlet Parkiet (via Comicbook), CD Projekt Red CFO Piotr Nielubowicz elaborated on the benefits of having Ciri lead The Witcher 4. According to him, this decision unlocks "both artistic and narrative" potential, allowing the team to explore the game's universe from a fresh viewpoint. While he refrained from revealing specifics, Nielubowicz expressed enthusiasm for Ciri’s evolution as a young Witcher. Earlier this year, Geralt’s voice actor, Doug Cockle, also voiced his support for Ciri, hoping to see more book-inspired moments in future games.
While Ciri and Geralt have been confirmed for The Witcher 4, the fate of other beloved characters remains uncertain. Denise Gough, the voice behind Yennefer, recently stated that she is unsure if she will reprise her role. Fans are particularly curious about potential romantic arcs for Ciri, given her complex relationships in the lore.
In March, CD Projekt Red announced that The Witcher 4 had entered pre-production. Additionally, 2025 marks the 10th anniversary of The Witcher 3, prompting the studio to release commemorative artwork and plan special events, including a concert tour. However, further surprises may still be in store.
