Former Star Wars Battlefront 2 Developers Express Interest in Reuniting for Battlefront 3
2025-05-23 22:54:56A former developer of Star Wars Battlefront 2 has revealed that he and his former colleagues are eager to "get the band back together" for a potential third game. Star Wars Battlefront 2 is currently enjoying a remarkable surge in player numbers, as fans rally to revive interest in the 2017 shooter, hoping to persuade EA to reconsider the franchise's future. The original Star Wars Battlefront series flourished in the early 2000s, and EA rebooted it in 2015, followed by a sequel in 2017.
Despite initial backlash over its controversial loot box mechanics and microtransactions, Star Wars Battlefront 2 underwent significant improvements, including an overhauled progression system and the removal of pay-to-win elements. The game now boasts over 57,000 player reviews on Steam, with a "Very Positive" rating. Although official support ended in 2020, a recent petition urging EA to develop Star Wars Battlefront 3 has gained nearly 8,500 signatures in just a few days, demonstrating strong player demand for a new installment.
Following the viral success of the Star Wars Battlefront 3 petition, Star Wars Battlefront 2 has seen a dramatic spike in player activity, particularly on Steam. The eight-year-old game, which previously averaged around 1,000 concurrent players, recently peaked at over 9,000. Amid growing discussions about a potential sequel, Mats Helge Holm, a developer who worked on both the 2015 and 2017 Battlefront titles, commented on Reddit that he and his former team members "want to get the gang back together."
The sudden surge in players is likely linked to the finale of Andor Season 2, which received widespread acclaim. Andor actor Muhannad Ben Amor, who portrays Wilmon Paak, has also voiced support for Battlefront 3. Shortly after the player resurgence made headlines, Amor took to Instagram, stating, "Star Wars gotta give us Battlefront 3... ASAP." He further revealed his deep connection to the franchise, having logged nearly 470 hours in Star Wars Battlefront 2 (2017).
EA has remained silent on the recent player spike, but the community continues to push for a sequel. Popular YouTuber Bombastic recently encouraged fans to flood Star Wars Battlefront 2 servers on May 24 to send a clear message to EA about the demand for Battlefront 3.
However, even a massive player resurgence may not be enough to convince EA. Reports indicate that DICE pitched Star Wars Battlefront 3 after the 2017 sequel, but EA reportedly rejected the idea due to high licensing costs.
