Despite fan requests for larger multiplayer sessions, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 will not increase its co-op player count beyond three, as confirmed by developer Saber Interactive. The sequel to the iconic Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine restricts co-op play to three players in its campaign. Focus Entertainment, the game's publisher, recently announced an upcoming Siege mode, a new co-op experience for players.

Set in Games Workshop's grimdark universe, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is a third-person shooter focused on cooperative gameplay. Players take on the role of Lieutenant Titus, a Primaris Lieutenant of the Ultramarines, battling the relentless Tyranid swarm and Chaos Marines.

In an interview with IGN, Saber's Chief Creative Officer, Tim Willits, clarified that increasing the player cap was never part of the development roadmap. While fans hoped the new Siege mode might allow for larger squads, Willits explained that scaling enemy difficulty for four or more players proved too challenging.

Despite modders successfully bypassing the three-player limit using Space Marine 2's modding tools, Saber Interactive has no plans to officially support larger co-op groups. Willits emphasized that balancing combat encounters for additional players would make the game too easy, disrupting the intended experience.

While Saber Interactive remains firm on the three-player limit, the modding community has already expanded possibilities. A group of modders released a 12-player co-op mod, drastically exceeding the original cap. Other creative mods, like adding the Power Axe or even Thomas the Tank Engine, showcase the game's flexibility.

With the potential for larger-scale battles and additional features, the modding scene might eventually influence Saber Interactive to reconsider official support for expanded co-op.
