Hollow Knight: Silksong Confirmed to Be Microtransaction-Free

Hollow Knight: Silksong will not feature any form of microtransactions, as confirmed by a Team Cherry representative. This statement came in response to an ESRB age rating that initially listed "in-game purchases" as part of the game's content.

After more than six years in development, the highly anticipated sequel to Hollow Knight is slated for release in late 2025. A recent update to the game’s Xbox Store page initially assigned it a "Teen" rating, citing "in-game purchases" as a contributing factor. This led to speculation that Silksong might include randomized item packs available for real money.

Fans quickly reached out to Team Cherry's PR representative, Matthew 'Leth' Griffin, who clarified that the rating was incorrect. "'In-Game Purchases' should not be listed there; there isn't anything like that in the game," Griffin stated. He later promised to investigate the erroneous listing.

Within a day of Griffin's statement, the Xbox Store page was updated to reflect an "Everyone 10+" rating, citing "mild blood" and "fantasy violence"—consistent with the first game's Voidheart Edition. However, the ESRB database still does not list Silksong, suggesting the updated rating may be a placeholder. Alternatively, Team Cherry could have requested confidentiality from the ESRB to delay the official rating's public release.

While Silksong has been rated in Australia since April 2024, age ratings are not always indicative of a game's development progress, as they can be submitted at any stage. Team Cherry's confirmation about the absence of microtransactions follows another recent clarification—that the game's release is not tied to the ROG Xbox Ally X handheld, despite being showcased on the device during the June 2025 Xbox Games Showcase.
