As Atlus' first original IP outside their established Persona and Shin Megami Tensei franchises, Metaphor: ReFantazio represented a bold new direction for the studio.

The recently distributed survey, as reported by Persona Central, includes a particularly intriguing question (Question 49) that asks respondents about their interest in potential sequels for various Atlus franchises. While including expected titles like Persona and Etrian Odyssey, the survey notably includes Metaphor: ReFantazio - suggesting the company is at least considering expanding this new universe.

However, sales figures present a mixed picture. While the game achieved an impressive one million copies sold in its first day, subsequent sales slowed considerably, reaching two million total units. This front-loaded performance leaves questions about the commercial viability of a sequel, despite the game's artistic achievements.

Recent rumors about a potential Nintendo Switch 2 port could breathe new life into the franchise. A next-generation console release might expose the game to a wider audience, potentially improving the business case for continuing the series. Director Katsura Hashino previously stated no official sequel plans existed in 2024, suggesting any follow-up would be several years away at minimum.
