Cognosphere Files $150K Lawsuit Against Honkai: Star Rail Player Over Alleged Leaks
2025-06-17 17:19:47Cognosphere, the publisher behind Honkai: Star Rail, has initiated legal action against a player seeking $150,000 in damages for purported copyright violations. The company, which collaborates with developer HoYoverse, is known for popular gacha titles including Honkai: Star Rail, Genshin Impact, and the upcoming Zenless Zone Zero.
Leaks have become a persistent issue in the gacha gaming community, with unauthorized disclosures of datamined content—ranging from unreleased characters to story elements—frequently surfacing on social media. These leaks often involve early or discarded game builds, prompting aggressive legal responses from companies like Cognosphere. This follows their previous lawsuit against Ubatcha, a well-known HoYoverse leaker, for disseminating Genshin Impact details.
The latest lawsuit, filed on June 6, 2025, targets a player identified as Alfredo Lopez. According to court documents obtained by Game File, Lopez allegedly streamed gameplay featuring the unreleased 5-star character Castorice a month before her official debut in Version 3.2. Cognosphere seeks $150,000 in damages if Lopez is found liable for copyright infringement.
The complaint highlights that Lopez's Discord broadcast reached over 12,000 viewers, though it remains unclear how he accessed the leaked content. Cognosphere argues that premature leaks spoil player experiences and damage the integrity of their games. The publisher emphasized that unauthorized access to updates undermines Honkai: Star Rail's carefully planned rollout strategy.
