Splitgate 2 Developer Announces Layoffs

1047 Games, the development team responsible for the popular portal-based shooter Splitgate 2, has recently implemented workforce reductions affecting an unspecified number of employees. This decision comes just weeks after the game's official release on June 6 across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms.

The past month has been particularly eventful for the studio. Following the free-to-play FPS's open beta launch on May 22 and its full release in early June, the development team has been working tirelessly. The game demonstrated strong performance metrics, with its player base tripling compared to beta numbers and reaching over 25,000 peak concurrent players on Steam.

In an official LinkedIn statement, 1047 Games disclosed that it had parted ways with "a small group" of staff members to reallocate resources toward improving the game. The studio emphasized its commitment to refining the Splitgate 2 experience based on community feedback. Notably, co-founders Ian Proulx and Nicholas Bagamian have voluntarily relinquished their salaries as the project enters its next development phase.

The layoffs occur amidst recent controversies surrounding the studio. CEO Ian Proulx faced criticism for his attire during the Summer Game Fest presentation, leading to a public apology. Additionally, the game initially received backlash for its microtransaction pricing, though the team quickly addressed these concerns through updates.

While the workforce reduction raises concerns within the gaming community, 1047 Games has demonstrated responsiveness to player feedback. The studio's swift resolution of microtransaction issues and continued support for Splitgate 2 suggest an ongoing commitment to the live-service title's long-term success.
