Call of Duty HQ App May Soon Split Modern Warfare Titles Into Standalone Apps

The much-debated Call of Duty HQ application might be facing significant modifications, with insider reports indicating that 2022's Modern Warfare 2 and 2023's Modern Warfare 3 will soon become independent applications, separating from the current unified launcher. Originally launched alongside Modern Warfare 3, the Call of Duty HQ app aimed to consolidate major franchise titles under one platform. However, players have consistently criticized its performance and user experience, demanding its discontinuation.

Since the 2019 reboot of Modern Warfare, the Call of Duty franchise has undergone numerous transformations. The introduction of Warzone revolutionized the series with its battle royale mode, while Infinity Ward's revamped IW engine powered the Modern Warfare reboot. Despite initial success, the 2023 integration of MW2, MW3, and Warzone into the Call of Duty HQ app sparked frustration. The addition of Black Ops 6 to the launcher in late 2024 further aggravated the community.

The Call of Duty HQ app has faced backlash for its cumbersome interface and excessive storage demands. Players have long advocated for a return to standalone apps for each title. While Activision has remained silent, data miner Reality recently uncovered evidence suggesting MW2 and MW3 will be removed from the launcher, potentially marking the beginning of the end for the controversial platform.

Following the Season 4 Reloaded update, Reality discovered in-game files hinting at Activision's plans to separate MW2 and MW3 from the HQ app. A text string indicates players will need to reinstall both games as standalone applications. The gaming community reacted enthusiastically, with Twitter user Jaayshot celebrating the news, while others speculated this might pave the way for future titles to join the launcher.

While the exact timeline remains unclear, this potential change coincides with the upcoming release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. Activision may be clearing space for new content by removing older titles. Black Ops 7 is expected to launch in late October or early November, following series tradition, and will be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC platforms.
