FTC Distributes Second Wave of Fortnite Refunds Following Epic Games Settlement
2025-06-27 16:18:10The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has processed another significant wave of refunds to Fortnite players, marking the latest development in Epic Games' $245 million settlement agreement from 2022. This legal action originated from allegations that the popular game developer employed misleading tactics that resulted in unintended purchases by consumers.
Following an initial distribution in December 2024 that compensated 629,344 affected players, the FTC announced on June 25-26 that it has disbursed approximately $126 million in this second phase. Combined with previous payments, the total refund amount now reaches $198 million, leaving about $47 million remaining from the original settlement fund.
The refund initiative specifically addresses complaints about Fortnite's interface design, which the FTC characterized as featuring 'counterintuitive and confusing button configurations' that frequently led to accidental purchases. Eligible players have reported receiving average refunds of about $114 per claim.
In a significant update, the FTC has reopened the claims process until July 9, allowing additional qualified players to seek compensation through the official portal at ftc.gov/fortnite. There are three primary eligibility criteria for these refunds:
- Players who made unintended purchases due to confusing interface designs
- Accounts locked after disputing unauthorized charges with credit card companies
- Minors who made purchases without parental consent between 2017-2022
Payment distribution comes with specific requirements: PayPal recipients must accept funds within 30 days, while check recipients have 90 days to cash their payments. This settlement also mandated several operational changes for Epic Games, including implementing clearer purchase confirmation systems and prohibiting account locks over payment disputes.
