MindsEye's Controversial Launch and the Road to Redemption

Leslie Benzies, the former president of Rockstar Games and producer of Grand Theft Auto, has reportedly informed Build a Rocket Boy employees about plans to "relaunch" their debut title MindsEye following its catastrophic release in June 2025. After leaving Rockstar in 2016, Benzies established Build a Rocket Boy in 2018, which unveiled its first project, MindsEye, to widespread disappointment from both gamers and reviewers.

The gaming community had high expectations for Build a Rocket Boy given Benzies' pedigree, but MindsEye quickly earned the dubious distinction of being the year's lowest-rated game. With a Metacritic score of 38/100 from critics and 2.5/10 from users, the game's technical shortcomings - including persistent bugs, glitches, and performance issues - drew particular ire. Reports indicated that even PlayStation 5 Pro users struggled to maintain a stable 30 FPS.

The disastrous rollout has drawn comparisons to Cyberpunk 2077's infamous 2020 launch, which saw CD Projekt Red undertake extensive repairs to restore player trust. According to anonymous sources speaking to IGN, Benzies recently addressed his team for the first time since launch, expressing confidence that MindsEye would "bounce back" through a comprehensive relaunch strategy.

In a surprising twist, Benzies allegedly attributed the game's troubled release to "internal and external saboteurs" during a staff video call. This echoes previous comments from Build a Rocket Boy co-CEO Mark Gerhard, who had suggested that negative previews might have been influenced by paid detractors aiming to undermine the studio's success.

Despite these claims, the studio faces significant challenges following reported layoffs just weeks after launch. Nevertheless, Build a Rocket Boy has maintained a steady stream of updates addressing performance issues and bugs, with the third major patch recently deployed for consoles and a PC version imminent.
