Monster Train 2: A Detailed Look at the Upcoming Content Roadmap
2025-07-07 11:58:32Shiny Shoe has unveiled an ambitious content roadmap for Monster Train 2, promising a series of free updates and a significant expansion later this year. The sequel to the beloved indie deckbuilder was first announced in February, accompanied by a free demo on Steam for PC players.
The official release date confirmed that Monster Train 2 would launch on May 21 for PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X/S. A new trailer introduced the game's primary antagonists, the Titans, formidable foes players must defeat to prevent them from seizing control of Heaven. The original Monster Train was a hit among roguelike enthusiasts, earning strong reviews and setting high expectations for its successor.
Since its release, Monster Train 2 has garnered a robust player base, surpassing 500,000 players. To celebrate this milestone and maintain momentum, Shiny Shoe has outlined its post-launch plans. The first update, Lost Arsenal, is slated for Q3 2025 and will be free. This update will introduce new cards for all clans, clanless equipment, room cards, and rebalanced legacy cards, aiming to enhance strategic depth and diversify gameplay. This marks the start of a three-phase update cycle.
The second update, arriving in Q4 2025, remains unnamed but will bring Void-based threats, tougher bosses, new mutators, artifacts, and additional cosmetics. The most substantial update, planned for Q1 2026, combines free content with a paid expansion. While specifics are scarce, it will feature a new game mode, an entirely new clan, and other major additions. Each update will also include bug fixes, balance adjustments, and localization improvements based on player feedback.
The roadmap demonstrates Shiny Shoe's commitment to expanding Monster Train 2's already well-received foundation. Currently, the game boasts nearly 96% positive reviews on Steam, with a peak concurrent player count of 18,503—surpassing the original's all-time high of 14,073. Additionally, Monster Train 2 has ventured into crossovers, including a recent collaboration with Balatro.
