Sci-Fi Horror Game Routine Nears Completion After Decade-Long Development Journey
2025-07-09 02:03:26After more than a decade in development, the atmospheric first-person sci-fi horror title Routine is finally nearing completion. Developer Lunar Software recently broke their three-year silence with an encouraging development update, confirming the project is "beginning to approach the finish line." Originally announced in 2012 with a planned 2013 release, the game faced numerous obstacles before being revived in 2022 with support from indie publisher Raw Fury.
The game made a stunning reappearance during Summer Game Fest 2022, showcasing its distinctive retro-futuristic aesthetic blending 1970s environments with 1980s technology. The trailer's scanline-heavy visual style and oppressive atmosphere immediately set it apart from other sci-fi horror titles. Notably, the reveal confirmed Routine would launch day one on Xbox Game Pass, giving the title significant visibility.
In a recent Steam post titled "Heartbeat," the three-person development team shared that progress is proceeding smoothly as they enter the final stages. However, they also revealed that acclaimed composer Mick Gordon (Doom 2016, Doom Eternal) departed the project a year ago, though his existing work will remain in the final product.
While some fans have expressed frustration over the extended development period and lack of communication, the timing might ultimately benefit Routine. The game avoided direct competition with major 2022-2023 horror releases like The Callisto Protocol and Dead Space remake, potentially giving it more room to stand out upon launch.
Though no specific release window was provided, the team's confidence suggests a possible 2026 launch. With major gaming events like Gamescom Opening Night Live and The Game Awards approaching, there's speculation about potential new reveals, possibly including a PlayStation version announcement to complement the confirmed Xbox and PC releases.
