Horizon Franchise Surpasses 38 Million Sales Amid Legal Battle with Tencent
2025-07-29 08:19:49The Horizon franchise, developed by Guerrilla Games, has achieved a remarkable milestone with over 38 million copies sold worldwide. This news comes amid Sony's legal action against Tencent Games regarding Light of Motiram, a game accused of bearing striking similarities to the Horizon series.
The franchise began with Horizon Zero Dawn in 2017, introducing players to Aloy, a young warrior navigating a post-apocalyptic world dominated by mechanical creatures and warring tribes. Since then, the series has expanded with Horizon: Forbidden West (2022), the VR spin-off Horizon Call of the Mountain (2023), and the family-friendly LEGO Horizon Adventures (2024).
Sony's lawsuit against Tencent alleges that Light of Motiram, announced in late 2024, copies key elements from Horizon, including its robotic wildlife design and protagonist. Legal documents filed by Sony reveal the franchise's updated sales figures, marking a significant increase from the 32 million units reported in May 2023.
The legal battle highlights Sony's aggressive protection of its intellectual property. The company is seeking substantial damages and an injunction to prevent Light of Motiram's release. Meanwhile, Guerrilla Games continues to expand the Horizon universe with a third mainline game in development, following the events of Forbidden West's Burning Shores DLC.
