IllFonic Announces New Halloween Game: A Return to Haddonfield

American game developer IllFonic, renowned for their expertise in asymmetric multiplayer titles, has officially announced they are working on a new Halloween-themed game. The revelation came during Gamescom 2025, where the studio confirmed the project is currently targeting a 2026 release across multiple gaming platforms.

A Return to Haddonfield

While John Carpenter's Halloween franchise has made numerous appearances in popular games including Dead by Daylight, Fortnite, and various Call of Duty titles over the years, standalone games based on the iconic horror IP have been remarkably scarce. Following the original Halloween game released for Atari 2600 in 1983, fans waited over 35 years for another dedicated title, which finally arrived in October 2024 with Boss Team Games' RetroRealms: Halloween DLC. At that time, the publisher hinted at another project in development, now revealed to be this ambitious new title.

The highly anticipated project has now been officially unveiled, though surprisingly not by Boss Team Games but by IllFonic, the Colorado-based studio that has built a reputation for creating compelling asymmetric multiplayer experiences based on popular film franchises. Still carrying the working title Halloween: The Game, the project received a thrilling two-minute reveal trailer during Gamescom 2025. While the footage appears to be rendered using the game's engine, it primarily serves to establish the atmospheric setting rather than showcasing actual gameplay, while simultaneously providing a tense introduction to Michael Myers, the iconic antagonist of the enduring slasher film series.

Gun Interactive, the development team behind The Texas Chain Saw Massacre game, will serve as co-publisher alongside IllFonic for Halloween: The Game. From a gameplay perspective, the title is described as a one-versus-many stealth horror experience that faithfully honors John Carpenter's slasher classic. Players will have the opportunity to stalk the residents of Haddonfield as the terrifying Michael Myers, or alternatively work together as civilians attempting to protect each other by alerting authorities before falling victim to the relentless killer.

IllFonic has partnered with Compass International Pictures and Further Front to ensure an authentic recreation of the 1978 original film. From meticulously recreated iconic locations to a soundtrack that draws directly from the first film's legendary score, the developers are committed to delivering a maximally immersive experience for dedicated Halloween fans. While primarily designed as an asymmetric multiplayer title, Halloween: The Game will also include support for solo play through its Story Mode, which will offer a similar gameplay experience using AI-controlled bots in place of human players.

The new Halloween game is currently scheduled for release in 2026, with confirmed availability for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC platforms including both Steam and the Epic Games Store. This upcoming title will represent IllFonic's fifth major release in six years, following their previous works including Predator: Hunting Grounds, Arcadegeddon, Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, and Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game.
