Industry insiders suggest Sony Interactive Entertainment might be preparing to reduce the internal storage capacity of the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition specifically for the European market. This potential change could disappoint gaming enthusiasts who haven't yet acquired their next-generation console, particularly since this model lacks physical disc drive functionality.

Since its November 2020 launch during the global pandemic, the PlayStation 5 has dominated current-generation console sales. Recent corporate disclosures revealed Sony has shipped over 80 million units across all variants, including the standard edition, PS5 Slim, and the premium PS5 Pro model.

According to reliable sources from French gaming publication Deal Labs, beginning September 13th, European retailers will receive PS5 Digital Edition units featuring 825 GB solid-state drives instead of the current 1 TB configuration. Notably, the console's retail pricing will remain unchanged despite this storage reduction. This follows April 2025's price adjustment that increased the Digital Edition from €449 to €499 across European markets.

Industry analysts speculate this storage modification might represent Sony's strategy to maintain current pricing structures in European territories. Last month witnessed similar pricing adjustments in North America, where the Digital Edition increased from $449 to $499, the standard model from $499 to $549, and the premium PS5 Pro jumped from $699 to $749. These changes reflect broader industry trends, with Microsoft implementing Xbox price increases and Nintendo's Switch 2 launching at higher-than-anticipated price points.

Software pricing has also experienced adjustments across Sony's ecosystem. June 2025 brought unexpected price increases for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games in Brazil and Turkey, with titles reaching approximately 400 Brazilian Real ($73 USD) and 3,500 Turkish Lira ($88 USD) respectively.

Amid these changes, Sony continues to expand its accessory lineup with special edition controllers. The company recently announced an Astro Bot-inspired DualSense wireless controller scheduled for October 30th release. This limited-edition Joyful controller, available for pre-order starting September 12th, maintains the $80 price point of previous special editions while featuring unique aesthetic elements inspired by the popular platform game.
