Dragon Quest Creator Hints at More Remakes in Development
2025-09-21 02:58:38According to recent comments from Dragon Quest series creator Yuji Horii, additional remakes from the beloved JRPG franchise are currently in development. While these projects aren't expected to release before Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined, they may focus on earlier entries in the series, potentially including the fan-favorite Zenithian Trilogy games.
Square Enix officially announced the Dragon Quest 7 remake during Nintendo's September 12 Direct presentation. This reimagined version of Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past is scheduled to launch on February 5, 2026, bringing modern enhancements to the classic title.
During a September 15 livestream appearance on 'Yuubou and Mashirito no KosoKoso Housoukyoku,' Horii responded to questions about why Square Enix chose to remake Dragon Quest 7 before the fourth, fifth, and sixth installments. The creator explained that 'a lot of things are moving around, but it was just done first by chance,' suggesting that other remakes are indeed in various stages of development.
While Horii's comments don't confirm that all three Zenithian Trilogy games will receive remakes, they strongly suggest that at least some earlier entries are being considered. The interconnected nature of Dragon Quest 4, 5, and 6—all sharing the common element of the sky castle Zenithia—means that modernizing these titles would require more coordinated development efforts compared to standalone games like Dragon Quest 7.
Square Enix has revealed that Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined will feature tightened pacing through the removal of side content with minimal relevance to the main storyline, while simultaneously adding new scenarios. The remake promises comprehensive visual upgrades and system refinements, though specific details remain undisclosed.
Meanwhile, other Dragon Quest projects continue their development. Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake is scheduled for an October 30 release on PC and consoles, following the successful November 2024 launch of Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, which sold over two million copies in its first three weeks. The next mainline installment, Dragon Quest 12, originally announced in 2021, remains in development using Unreal Engine 5, though Square Enix has shared limited updates about its progress.
