Former God of War Executive Champions Generative AI in Game Development

Since OpenAI introduced ChatGPT in 2022, generative AI has emerged as one of the most discussed technological advancements across multiple sectors, with the gaming industry being no exception. During a recent interview at Gamescom Asia x Thailand Games Show, Juinio presented a compelling case for why developers should embrace generative AI tools. She characterized AI as a supplementary instrument that enhances developers' capabilities rather than replacing them. According to Juinio, developers who resist adopting these tools are essentially 'selling themselves short' and missing opportunities to expand their creative potential.
Juinio emphasized that generative AI technology will continue to evolve regardless of industry acceptance, making it practical for developers to learn how to leverage it effectively. She drew parallels between current AI tools and procedurally-generated content systems that have been industry standards for decades, specifically mentioning SpeedTree—software that has been generating realistic vegetation in real-time for over twenty years.
Despite her enthusiasm for AI integration, Juinio was careful to clarify that she doesn't believe generative AI will ever replace the "heart and soul" that human developers bring to game creation. She stressed that the fundamental creative vision, storytelling, and emotional depth of games will always require human imagination and direction.
Juinio's perspective appears increasingly validated by industry trends. Recent reports indicate that major platform holders Sony and Microsoft are actively planning to incorporate generative AI into their development pipelines. Meanwhile, other prominent publishers like Nintendo maintain a more cautious approach, highlighting the ongoing diversity of opinion within the industry.
The former God of War executive isn't alone in her support for generative AI. Earlier this October, a Battlefield 6 executive described the technology as "very seducing," though she noted it wasn't used for final assets in that particular project. Rebecka Coutaz, vice president and general manager of DICE and Criterion Games, expressed optimism about AI's potential applications during early development stages.
While most AI advocates position the technology as a supportive tool that enhances game development efficiency, some industry figures envision more ambitious applications. Elon Musk recently announced plans to release a game created primarily through generative AI by the end of 2026, though this announcement has been met with considerable skepticism regarding its feasibility and quality.
