Recently surfaced online images have unveiled details about a previously unknown multiplayer God of War game that was in development before being canceled. The project, originally being developed by Bluepoint Games, appears to have been set to return the franchise to its Greek roots, as evidenced by newly revealed screenshots.

God of War Ragnarok

Earlier this year, Sony reportedly terminated development on two live-service titles. One was an open-world military shooter from Bend Studio, while the other was this multiplayer God of War experience being crafted by Bluepoint Games, the studio renowned for their exceptional work on the Demon's Souls remake.

Images shared with gaming publication MP1ST have provided fascinating insights into the canceled live-service God of War project. The collection of 23 images suggests the game would have marked a return to Greek settings for the franchise, featuring temples and artifacts clearly inspired by ancient Greek architecture and mythology. The screenshots reveal expansive environments including temple interiors, caves containing massive sulfur pools, and other large-scale locations likely designed to accommodate multiplayer gameplay.

God of War 2

One particularly intriguing location identified in the leaks is described as "Hades' Armory." While it remains uncertain whether Hades himself would have appeared in the canceled game, the images indicate this location held significant importance, appearing in two distinct states. One version shows the area in its normal condition, while a second "cursed" state depicts the location overtaken by red corrosion, potentially indicating a dynamic gameplay mechanic that has been lost with the project's cancellation.

God of War

Despite this cancellation, multiple God of War projects appear to remain in active development. Recent rumors suggest a 2.5D Metroidvania-style God of War game featuring Kratos' brother Deimos as the protagonist could potentially release in 2026.

Most fans remain eager for information about the next mainline installment in the God of War series. Current speculation indicates the next major God of War title might be set in Egypt, a location fans have long hoped to explore. Santa Monica Studio had previously considered setting a God of War game in Egypt, lending some credibility to these rumors. Additional speculation suggests Kratos might wield a curved Egyptian sword resembling a scimitar or khopesh, though all such information remains unconfirmed and should be treated as speculation.
