Crystal Dynamics Announces Third Round of Layoffs in 2025
2025-11-14 22:58:13Crystal Dynamics, the primary developer behind the Tomb Raider franchise since 2003, has confirmed another significant workforce reduction as part of its ongoing organizational restructuring. This latest announcement marks the third time the company has downsized its development team in 2025, with nearly 30 positions being eliminated across various departments and projects.
The Tomb Raider series first launched in 1996 under Core Design's development. Over the years, development responsibilities have shifted between multiple studios including Aspyr, Eidos Montreal, and Square Enix Montreal. However, Crystal Dynamics has maintained the longest association with the franchise, initially serving as lead developer from 2003 to 2017 and resuming the role from 2021 to present day. Their upcoming Tomb Raider project continues in development without a confirmed release date.
Despite the Tomb Raider franchise's enduring success spanning nearly three decades, Crystal Dynamics has now implemented its third workforce reduction in under eight months. The company's official LinkedIn statement confirmed the elimination of approximately 30 positions across multiple departments as part of strategic restructuring efforts. In addressing the gaming community, the announcement described these workforce reductions as 'painful choices' necessary to optimize development of the next Tomb Raider installment, which Amazon Games will publish. The company has committed to providing support resources for affected employees during their transition.
The initial 2025 layoffs occurred in late March, resulting in 17 job losses, though specific project impacts remained undisclosed. A second round followed in August, with Crystal Dynamics choosing not to reveal the exact number of positions eliminated during that restructuring phase, leaving the total annual job reduction figures uncertain.
The August workforce reduction coincided with the cancellation of the Perfect Dark reboot, originally announced in late 2020. The project, planned for Xbox Series X|S and PC platforms, represented a collaborative effort between Crystal Dynamics and The Initiative that had been in development for over a decade. The game's cancellation also led to the closure of The Initiative studio. While Amazon has provided reassurances that the Tomb Raider project won't face similar termination, community responses to the latest announcement reflect both sympathy for affected developers and growing apprehension about the franchise's future direction.
