Genshin Impact's Yelan: The Phantom of Liyue and Player Frustration Over Extended Absences

The expansive and diverse roster of playable characters is a cornerstone of Genshin Impact's success. Each of the over 90 available characters boasts unique stories, abilities, and playstyles, contributing to the rich tapestry of the game's world, Teyvat.

However, with the continuous influx of new characters with each update, integrating all of them into the ongoing storyline has proven challenging for developer HoYoverse.

This challenge is highlighted by the extended absence of popular Liyue Hydro user, Yelan.  It's been over 720 days since her last in-game appearance, a notable gap considering her popularity and the record-breaking revenue generated by her double banner with Hu Tao during Version 3.4's Lantern Rite Festival.

The continued absence of Yelan has sparked frustration among fans, many of whom anticipated at least a cameo during the current Lantern Rite, particularly given her Liyue origins. Her last appearance was during the Lantern Rite Festival in Version 3.4.

Some players point out that Yelan's absence, while frustrating, aligns with her established character.  As a secretive agent who claims to work for the Liyue Ministry of Civil Affairs, she is often away on clandestine missions, shrouded in mystery.

Despite this, the community has expressed a desire for more dynamic character interactions within the overworld.  Simple dialogue sequences, particularly for special occasions like character birthdays, could significantly enhance the feeling of a living, breathing world where events unfold even without the Traveler's direct involvement.

This sentiment extends beyond Yelan. Kaedehara Kazuha, another fan-favorite, hasn't been involved in the main storyline since June 2023.  However, with HoYoverse confirming a return to the Electro nation of Inazuma in the upcoming Version 5.4, hopes are high for Kazuha's reappearance.

Yelan, too, might be due for a return, either in a new storyline or a rerun banner.  By comparison, Furina and Sigewinne, two characters introduced in Version 4.7, are already confirmed for the Limited Character banner in Version 5.4. Yelan's last banner appearance was in update 4.8.
