A recent surge in concurrent users pushed Steam past the 40 million mark, as recorded by SteamDB. This achievement comes shortly after the platform flirted with this number in previous weeks.  While the exact cause of this latest surge isn't definitively known, the highly successful launch of Monster Hunter Rise on Steam may have played a significant role.  The title quickly climbed the ranks to become one of the top five most played games on the platform.

Reaching 30 million concurrent users was a significant achievement for Steam in late 2022. To add another 10 million users in such a short time frame is a testament to the platform's continued growth and popularity.

Steam's success can be attributed, in part, to Valve's consistent focus on consumer-friendly practices. This approach stands in contrast to some industry competitors and resonates strongly with players.  With users amassing vast game libraries on the platform over the years, challenging Steam's dominance is becoming increasingly difficult for competitors, regardless of their resources.

Even initiatives like the Epic Games Store's free game offerings haven't managed to significantly sway users away from Steam.  This loyalty underscores the strength of Steam's ecosystem and the value it provides to gamers.
