This revelation comes as Kojima Productions finalizes development on their highly anticipated sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, set to launch this summer.

Scheduled for release on June 26, 2025, Death Stranding 2 continues the story eleven months after the original game's events. Protagonist Sam Bridges has established a new life in Mexico with his companion Lou, but the sequel promises to expand the franchise's unique universe in unexpected ways. As development nears completion, Kojima has begun sharing intriguing thoughts about the series' long-term potential.

Despite the sequel not yet reaching players, Kojima has revealed ambitious plans for the franchise's evolution. In recent interviews, the acclaimed director highlighted how Death Stranding 2's innovative Plate Gate mechanic could fundamentally change the series' future. This new gameplay element connects North America to Australia, enabling unprecedented fast travel between continents. Speaking with VGC, Kojima expressed enthusiasm about the mechanic's potential: 'The Plate Gate system opens infinite possibilities for sequels—I could theoretically create endless Death Stranding games using this concept!'

While confirmation of a third Death Stranding installment would thrill fans worldwide, Kojima remains cautious about setting expectations. The director clarified that while conceptual ideas exist, no concrete plans are in motion for Death Stranding 3. Notably, Kojima stated he wouldn't personally direct a potential threequel, instead considering passing creative leadership to a new team—a decision likely influenced by his studio's packed development schedule.

Following Death Stranding 2's launch, Kojima Productions will shift focus to OD, their enigmatic collaboration with horror maestro Jordan Peele. Announced in 2023, this experimental project remains shrouded in mystery, with only cryptic teasers released to date. Beyond this, Kojima plans to return to his espionage roots with Physint, a multimedia venture co-developed with PlayStation Studios that will span both gaming and film formats.
