Overwatch 2 Reveals Unused Street Fighter 6 Crossover Skin Concepts
2025-05-20 04:59:21Overwatch 2 recently unveiled several hero skin concepts that didn't progress beyond the planning stages for the upcoming Street Fighter 6 collaboration. While fans won't see these particular designs in-game, Blizzard's art team has hinted at potential future crossovers that might revisit these creative ideas.
The highly anticipated Street Fighter 6 collaboration arrives in Overwatch 2 on May 20, featuring eight distinct character skins. This marks Blizzard's most ambitious external IP crossover to date, with fan-favorite matchups like Chun-Li Juno, Ryu Hanzo, and Guile Soldier: 76.
In a recent interview with ComicBook, Overwatch 2 art director Dion Rogers discussed several character concepts that didn't progress beyond the conceptual phase. "Ken would have been fantastic to include," Rogers noted. "We considered a recolor for Hanzo or potentially exploring a Genji variant." Given Ken's status as Ryu's counterpart since the original Street Fighter, a Ken Genji skin would have created perfect symmetry with the confirmed Ryu Hanzo design.
The interview also revealed community enthusiasm for a Dee Jay Lucio skin, drawing parallels between Street Fighter 6's Jamaican music fighter and Overwatch 2's Brazilian healer. While this specific combination wasn't developed for the current event, Rogers expressed enthusiasm about the concept: "It sounds awesome. We'll get there, maybe one day," suggesting future collaborations remain possible.
Blizzard enlisted Arnold Tsang, former Overwatch art director and current Azuki creative lead, to assist with the crossover. As a longtime Street Fighter fan, Tsang noted the fighting series significantly influenced Overwatch's development. "There are enough characters across both universes," Tsang joked, "that we could theoretically create Street Fighter skins for every Overwatch hero."
This collaboration represents both Blizzard's largest FPS crossover and one of their fastest-executed events. Following closely after the Gundam Wing collaboration, the accelerated timeline demonstrates the team's growing efficiency with partnership content. However, Rogers cautioned that two major crossovers per season shouldn't become the expected norm, though the team remains open to opportunities: "If we can, we'll do it. We'll try."
