After more than a decade since its initial release, The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) may finally receive crossplay functionality. Game director Rich Lambert and ZeniMax studio director Matt Firor recently discussed this long-requested feature during the final episode of The Elder Scrolls Online Podcast. While technical hurdles remain, Microsoft's current multiplatform approach could accelerate development.

Originally launched in 2014 for PC before expanding to PlayStation and Xbox platforms, ESO transports players to Tamriel approximately 1,000 years before Skyrim's events. After transitioning from subscription-based to buy-to-play with optional ESO Plus membership, the MMORPG has thrived through annual Chapter expansions like the upcoming Gold Road in June 2024.

The development team confirmed they're actively working on backend modifications to enable cross-platform play. Currently, ESO operates separate mega-servers divided by platform and region (e.g., PC North America, PlayStation Europe). Implementing crossplay would require significant infrastructure changes to unify these segregated communities.

Matt Firor noted that while Microsoft's multiplatform strategy provides helpful frameworks, substantial development work remains before crossplay becomes reality. The team hasn't committed to a release timeline, urging fans to maintain realistic expectations.

Compared to competitors like Final Fantasy XIV which built crossplay into its foundation, ESO's decade-old architecture presents unique technical challenges. However, the potential benefits for community engagement and longevity make this a priority for ZeniMax Online Studios.

While crossplay development continues, ZeniMax keeps enhancing ESO's core experience. The Scribing system will become available to all players in July 2024, demonstrating the studio's commitment to improving accessibility.
