Ubisoft Greenlights Next The Crew Game, Returning to Original Formula
2025-06-01 22:45:55According to a new report from a reliable industry insider, Ubisoft has greenlit another The Crew game. This would be the fourth main entry in Ubisoft's open-world racing franchise and is said to mark a return to the series' original formula.
The The Crew series is developed exclusively by Ubisoft Ivory Tower, a Lyon-based studio established in 2007. After the first game launched in 2014, the developer released The Crew 2 in 2018 and The Crew Motorfest in 2023.
According to Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson, who has a strong track record with Ubisoft leaks, "the next The Crew game has been greenlit." While the exact timing of this decision remains unclear, Henderson clarified that this will be a sequel to The Crew 2 rather than a follow-up to The Crew Motorfest.
The Crew Motorfest represented a major shift in the series' design philosophy. While the first two games featured scaled-down versions of the continental United States, the third installment focused on a condensed open-world environment based on Hawaii's O'ahu island. With its exotic setting, event-driven content, and festival theme, The Crew Motorfest drew clear inspiration from Forza Horizon, making it quite different from its predecessors.
Henderson's report suggests Ubisoft Ivory Tower will return to the series' earlier exploration-focused gameplay. This could mean the new game might adopt a numbered title like The Crew 3. While the studio may have begun work on this new project, The Crew Motorfest will continue receiving seasonal updates for the foreseeable future. The latest entry surpassed its predecessor's sales records early on and maintains a healthy player base, with in-game data showing tens of thousands of monthly active users.
If the fourth installment is indeed in pre-production, it likely won't release until well into the next console generation, expected to begin around late 2027. Modern game development cycles have grown significantly longer, with major projects often taking five years or more. A 2030 launch wouldn't rule out the possibility of the game being cross-gen, similar to The Crew Motorfest.
