RuneScape 3 Announces Major Overhaul of Microtransaction System
2025-06-27 09:32:29Jagex has announced significant upcoming changes to RuneScape 3's microtransaction system, though the full scope of these modifications remains undefined. The developer plans to determine the final overhaul approach through a series of experimental tests scheduled for summer 2025.
The announcement comes during a transitional period for Jagex. In March 2025, Jon Bellamy succeeded Phil Mansell as CEO, marking a leadership change after eight years. Bellamy's early decisions, including the controversial cancellation of RuneScape 3's Pride event, have already sparked player debates about the game's direction.
In a late June 2025 video address, CEO Bellamy characterized the current monetization approach as problematic, stating: "Our MTX approach is harming RuneScape, and it's time that we took action." He expressed ambitions to create player ownership similar to Old School RuneScape's successful model.
Summer 2025 Monetization Experiments
Jagex will implement three major tests:
- July 2025: Temporary removal of the Treasure Hunter loot box system
- August 2025: Double XP event excluding premium currency items
- September 2025: Treasure Hunter exclusives available via in-game store
Lead designer Mod Mohawk clarified these experiments will run for limited periods (approximately two weeks each) to gather player feedback and assess financial impacts.
While not all tests may become permanent, Bellamy emphasized the necessity for change: "If we want decades of a booming community, it's time we take some big swings." The company has not revealed plans beyond these summer experiments.
This overhaul follows the successful launch of RuneScape: Dragonwilds, demonstrating Jagex's continued investment in evolving its flagship MMORPG franchise while addressing long-standing player concerns about monetization practices.
