The End of Resident Evil Re:Verse and What's Next for the Franchise
2025-06-28 23:20:23On Monday, June 30, the multiplayer component of Resident Evil Village, Resident Evil Re:Verse, will officially shut down. This marks the end of Capcom's experimental foray into competitive multiplayer within the Resident Evil universe. Unlike previous attempts, Re:Verse was bundled with Village rather than released as a standalone title, which may have contributed to its lukewarm reception.
Resident Evil Village launched in 2021 as a purely single-player experience, with Re:Verse following in late 2022. The multiplayer mode offered a deathmatch-style gameplay featuring iconic characters and locations from the series. However, its delayed release and lack of significant player interest led Capcom to discontinue the service.
Resident Evil Re:Verse servers will go offline on June 29 at 11:59 PM PT (June 30 at 2:59 AM ET). After this point, the game will no longer be accessible, effectively erasing it from the Resident Evil legacy. Despite its inclusion with Village, Re:Verse failed to resonate with fans, receiving mixed to negative reviews.
With Re:Verse closing its doors, Capcom is shifting focus to Resident Evil Requiem, set to release on February 27, 2026. The game promises a return to the series' horror roots, offering both first- and third-person perspectives. Notably, Requiem will not include a multiplayer component, likely due to the lessons learned from Re:Verse.
While Re:Verse may not have succeeded, the demand for multiplayer Resident Evil experiences persists. Resident Evil: Resistance remains active, and fans continue to advocate for a revival of the Outbreak series—especially since Requiem will feature Grace Ashcroft, daughter of Outbreak protagonist Alyssa Ashcroft.
