Backyard Baseball '01 Returns: A Nostalgic Remaster for Modern Gamers

2025-07-01 05:26:15

After 23 years, Playground Productions and Mega Cat Studios have announced the revival of Humongous Entertainment's Backyard Baseball 2001 as Backyard Baseball '01. This enhanced remaster will launch on PC and mobile platforms, preserving all the original content including the officially licensed MLB athletes that made the 2001 sequel to Backyard Baseball '97 and Backyard Baseball '98 so memorable.

While MLB The Show currently dominates as the premier licensed baseball game series, Backyard Baseball holds a special place in gaming history as the childhood favorite that introduced baseball to a generation of PC gamers long before MLB The Show debuted in 2006. The game's unique charm comes from its ability to transform MLB superstars into adorable kid versions of themselves, letting players assemble dream teams and guide them through strategic gameplay to championship glory.

Backyard Baseball '01

To celebrate the franchise's 25th anniversary, Backyard Baseball '01 will return with all its original features intact: 30 customizable Backyard kids, 28 legendary MLB players, authentic team logos, hilarious bloopers, eight classic ballparks, multiple power-ups, and the iconic commentary from Sunny Day and Vinnie. Players can even warm up with batting practice against the mechanical pitcher Mr. Clanky before diving into full season play.

The Legendary Roster Returns

The remaster will feature the same star-studded lineup of MLB legends in their adorable kid forms, including:

  • Derek Jeter
  • Alex Rodriguez
  • Sammy Sosa
  • Randy Johnson
  • Tony Gwynn
  • Ivan Rodriguez

Players can utilize these stars across multiple game modes including Single Game, Random Pick-up, and the complete Season mode featuring 14-game schedules culminating in the BBL playoffs and the ultimate Ultra Grand Championship of the Universe Series.

Playground Productions acknowledges the challenges of bringing this classic to modern systems without access to the original source code. While the game won't support macOS due to compatibility issues, the Windows version will run smoothly with Steam achievement support. The developers have hinted at bonus features and haven't ruled out potential console releases, following the successful re-release of Backyard Baseball '97 on Switch and PS5.
