Argonaut Considers Remastering Cult Classic Buck Bumble for Modern Platforms
2025-07-05 22:44:57The development team behind the recent Croc: Legend of the Gobbos remaster has revealed ambitions to bring another Nintendo 64 classic to modern audiences. Argonaut Games executives have confirmed their interest in remastering Buck Bumble, the 1998 aerial shooter that became a cult favorite among N64 owners.
Originally developed by Argonaut and published by Ubisoft, Buck Bumble stood out as one of the Nintendo 64's more unique third-person shooters, featuring a cybernetic bee protagonist in futuristic combat scenarios. Despite its innovative concept, the game remained confined to Nintendo's 64-bit system with no subsequent ports or re-releases.
In an interview with MCV Develop (reported by VGC), Argonaut co-CEO Mike Arkin shared the studio's long-term vision: "We absolutely believe Buck Bumble deserves another chance. While Croc was our flagship franchise, Buck represented our willingness to experiment with 3D gameplay on Nintendo's hardware."
The potential remaster faces significant hurdles, however. Argonaut currently focuses on completing their Croc 2 remaster following the successful revival of the original Croc. Technical challenges also exist - Buck Bumble utilized a proprietary engine different from the Croc series, requiring substantial reengineering for modern systems.
Historical context explains why Buck Bumble remained obscure compared to other N64 titles. The Nintendo 64's smaller install base during the PlayStation era limited exposure, and Ubisoft's marketing focused primarily on European territories. Unlike many N64 classics, the game never appeared in Nintendo's Virtual Console or Switch Online libraries.
