According to Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, the game is progressing well, sparking excitement among fans eager to see what the acclaimed developer has in store.

Barlog, who has played pivotal roles in nearly every God of War title, hinted at his new venture as early as 2019 with a cryptic Twitter update. By October 2022, he confirmed he was working on something new, though details remained scarce. Clues emerged when a senior programmer at Santa Monica Studio listed an unannounced IP as their primary focus, with responsibilities tied to world progression. Further fuel was added to the speculation when Alanah Pearce, another studio member, mentioned involvement in a sci-fi project.

Schreier recently reaffirmed the project's active development in a ResetEra forum post, stating, "Cory Barlog's game is SSM's next big thing." While many speculate it's the rumored sci-fi title, no official confirmation has been provided. Given Eric Williams' leadership on God of War post-Ragnarok, Barlog's project is likely an entirely new franchise.

Meanwhile, God of War fans have other reasons to stay tuned. A 2.5D Metroidvania spin-off set in Greece is rumored for 2026, offering a fresh take on Kratos' saga. As for the next mainline entry, expectations suggest a longer wait, given Ragnarok's 2022 release.
