Itch.io Removes Adult Games from Public View Following Payment Processor Pressure
2025-07-25 02:31:08Independent game marketplace Itch.io has recently removed all adult-rated (NSFW) games from its search and browsing sections after an abrupt policy change influenced by its payment processing partners. This decision aligns with previous actions taken by Steam, with Itch.io explaining that the move is essential to preserve the platform's ability to handle transactions for game creators.
In recent years, adult-oriented gaming content has faced heightened scrutiny from major credit card providers such as Visa and Mastercard. Platforms like Steam have been compelled to enforce stricter content moderation due to concerns over fraudulent transactions, legal risks, and reputational damage. The latest controversy stemmed from a campaign by Australian advocacy group Collective Shout, which targeted games featuring explicit and disturbing sexual themes on both Steam and Itch.io.
The focal point of this debate was an extreme game titled No Mercy, which portrayed graphic sexual violence. After being quickly removed from Steam earlier this year, it became the centerpiece of Collective Shout's campaign urging payment processors to sever ties with platforms hosting such material. In response, Itch.io has now hidden all NSFW content from public view, noting that the "situation escalated quickly" without allowing time to forewarn affected creators.
An official announcement confirmed that Itch.io is conducting a comprehensive content review. While adult games remain accessible via direct URLs, creators must soon comply with new guidelines ensuring their material meets payment processor standards. Even critically acclaimed titles like Consume Me, which addressed sensitive topics including eating disorders and gender expectations, have been affected by these broad removals. Itch.io acknowledges some games may face permanent delisting but stresses that sustaining payment processing functionality remains crucial for supporting independent developers.
"Our payment processing capabilities are fundamental for every creator on our platform. To maintain operations and continue providing a marketplace for developers, we must prioritize our partnership with payment providers and implement immediate compliance measures."
However, many indie developers—particularly LGBTQ+ creators and those exploring personal, often challenging narratives—have voiced concerns about Itch.io's sudden policy shift. While preventing genuinely harmful content like No Mercy is undoubtedly important, the blanket removal of all "NSFW"-flagged material risks suppressing thoughtful and unconventional artistic expression. In attempting to satisfy corporate partners, Itch.io and Steam may be perpetuating a legacy of censorship and moral outrage, where "user protection" justifications potentially silence marginalized voices.
