SpongeBob SquarePants: Titans of the Tide Reportedly Excludes Original Nintendo Switch

An unannounced SpongeBob SquarePants game appears to be skipping the immensely popular Nintendo Switch in favor of its successor, the Switch 2. Given that many Nintendo fans still haven't been able to purchase the Switch 2, this decision by THQ Nordic, the publisher behind the upcoming title, comes as a surprise.

The existence of this new SpongeBob SquarePants game was first revealed when it received age ratings from South Korean and German regulatory boards in June. Titled SpongeBob SquarePants: Titans of the Tide, the game is reportedly in development for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. This leak aligns with earlier hints in 2024 suggesting a new SpongeBob game would arrive the following year. Recent reports have now provided additional details, including potential release dates and pricing.

According to Dealabs, SpongeBob SquarePants: Titans of the Tide is expected to launch on November 18, 2025, for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and the Nintendo Switch 2. Notably, the game will not be available on the original Switch, PlayStation 4, or Xbox One, potentially excluding a large portion of players. The report also indicates a standard price of $39.99 across all platforms, with physical editions planned for PS5 and Switch 2. An official announcement from THQ Nordic is anticipated within the next two weeks, possibly during a Nintendo Direct or the THQ Nordic Digital Showcase on August 1.

Despite the Switch 2's strong sales since its June 5 release, stock shortages have made it difficult for many players to upgrade. Nintendo has warned that supply constraints may persist into 2026, limiting accessibility for those still using the original Switch.

While Titans of the Tide could leverage the Switch 2's enhanced hardware, its sales might suffer without support for the original Switch's massive install base. However, with several months remaining before the rumored launch, more players may transition to the new console by then.
