Following acclaim for his film Weapons, director Zack Cregger is set to deliver a fresh perspective with his Resident Evil reboot. In a recent interview, Cregger disclosed how he intentionally avoided previous adaptations of the franchise during development to craft something truly original. The Resident Evil series, known as Biohazard in Japan, debuted in 1996 as a survival horror shooter by Capcom and has since expanded into various media, including films, TV shows, and novels.

The upcoming Resident Evil Survival Unit, a multiplayer strategy game, will feature beloved characters from the franchise, while Resident Evil Requiem, announced at Summer Game Fest, is slated for release alongside Cregger's reboot in 2026.

Avoiding Previous Adaptations for Authenticity

In a Deadline report shared via MovieWeb, Cregger admitted he hadn't watched any of Paul W.S. Anderson's Resident Evil films or the recent Welcome to Raccoon City. "I haven't seen the movies—that's just not my thing. But the games are my passion. I wanted to create a film that truly captures the essence of playing them," he explained. Cregger emphasized replaying Resident Evil 4 countless times to internalize its atmosphere. Leaked plot details suggest the reboot will depict Raccoon City pre-outbreak, aligning with fan expectations.

Casting and Narrative Departures

Rumors earlier this year hinted at a Euphoria actor being cast as Bryan, a courier entangled in Umbrella Corporation's chaos during a late-night delivery. The story escalates when a roadside encounter triggers an outbreak involving grotesque bio-engineered creatures. While Cregger respects the games' lore, he prioritizes storytelling over strict adherence: "I’ve never seen a movie quite like our take—it’s terrifying yet deeply narrative-driven."
