Established in 1994, IGDA stands as the world's largest nonprofit organization for game developers, boasting over 12,000 members. The organization has particularly criticized Steam's recent removal of adult-oriented games, stating: "We are deeply concerned about the ambiguous enforcement of policies that remove legally compliant, consensual games, particularly those created by LGBTQ+ and marginalized developers." This statement, released on July 29, echoes growing industry frustration with platform moderation practices.

IGDA is advocating for significant reforms in how digital storefronts handle content moderation. "Game creators deserve transparent guidelines, proper notification, and fair appeal processes," emphasized an IGDA representative. The criticism extends beyond Steam to platforms like Itch.io, which recently purged adult games without establishing proper recourse for affected developers.

The association acknowledges that payment processor pressure significantly influenced Steam's decisions, with activist groups like Australia's Collective Shout claiming responsibility for targeting games containing extreme content. While IGDA recognizes payment processors' right to establish content guidelines, it argues for more nuanced enforcement to prevent unnecessary removal of compliant games.
