The Nintendo Switch 2 continues to expand its backward-compatible game library with five additional titles now fully functional after the latest system update. This feature has been a major highlight for the Nintendo Switch 2, as Nintendo strives to provide players with seamless access to a vast array of games from its predecessor, the original Switch.

Nintendo first revealed the Switch 2's backward-compatibility capabilities earlier this year, confirming support for both physical and digital versions of most original Switch games, with a few exceptions. Since its launch on June 5, the console has already supported a significant number of Switch titles. A mid-July update further enhanced this feature by adding or fixing compatibility for 25 more games, including popular titles like Sky: Children of the Light and Portal 2.

Newly Compatible Games on Switch 2

  • Cotton Reboot High Tension
  • D.C.III: Da Capo III – Plus Story
  • DarkStar One: Nintendo Switch Edition
  • Disgaea 7
  • Vagante

The Switch 20.3.0 update, released on July 28, introduced stability improvements for both the Switch and Switch 2, along with enhanced HDR settings for the newer console. Among the less-publicized additions were fixes for five more Switch games, ensuring they run smoothly on the Switch 2. According to Nintendo Everything, these include DarkStar One: Nintendo Switch Edition, Disgaea 7, and Vagante. While the list isn't as extensive as the mid-July update, it includes niche titles like the visual novel DCIII: De Capo III - Plus Story and the shoot 'em up Cotton Reboot! High Tension!, alongside three games appealing to Western audiences.

One of the standout titles is the strategy RPG Disgaea 7, originally released in 2023. Though less mainstream in the West, the Disgaea series shares similarities with Persona, featuring anime-style visuals, mythological themes, and monster-taming mechanics, all wrapped in tactical gameplay reminiscent of Final Fantasy Tactics. Other notable additions include Vagante, an action-packed platformer by Nuke Nine, and the Switch version of DarkStar One, a space trading and combat simulator first released in 2006 and remastered for the Switch in 2024.

Backward compatibility has been a significant selling point for the Switch 2, especially given the mixed reception of its launch lineup. However, the console has gained momentum with critically acclaimed titles like Donkey Kong Bananza, one of 2025's highest-rated games. Fans can also look forward to upcoming releases such as Pokemon Legends: Z-A, Octopath Traveler 0, and Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.
